CHAPTER EIGHT
Score Mordecai
Miriam collapsed onto her side, fighting for air as she eyed him. A dirty, played, mocked sensation crawled over her heated skin. She waited for her anger, but the guard was there, blocking the wrong stuff. She didn’t want the guard. She didn’t need protecting from his issues, she needed to be free to examine and understand them.
“Your turn,” he said, sounding pissed.
She covered her breasts with her forearms, sitting at the edge of the table. “I’d like to dress first.”
She watched him hobble to the wall and open a door. One look at his battered body and she was back to remorse and concern. Funny how the guard blocked things like anger but not compassion.
He pulled out a towel and tossed it to her with hardly a look and she caught it. Climbing off the table, she turned, wrapping herself in it. A second ago she scorned the guard, but the ability to think clearly was needed with him. Like, why was he was so angry? She’d done everything he asked even if she was pissed at the moment.
She made her way to the door and opened it for him. She even gave a little smile, wanting him to know she wasn’t upset even though she could’ve been. She wanted him to see she accepted the parts of him she didn’t understand, give him the freedom to be himself without judgement.
He headed to the door and she cast her gaze down a little, giving him room to pass while fighting to hide the light tremble taking over her body. When he was next to her, he paused. She forced her head up and found him with his head lowered, like he wanted to say something. Her heart hammered as she eyed the hard tick of muscle at his jaw, feeling like he wanted to tell her something she didn’t want to hear.
Whatever silent battle he had with himself finally ended and he continued walking without a word.
She released a breath and followed him on shaky legs. She wouldn’t push him or pry. But as she watched him from behind, she remembered her plan. To use his session to build hers. And his entire session, it had felt like… one big punishment. For denying him, for making him work for what he wanted. And what did he want? Her?
As much as she wished that was true, it wasn’t. Not entirely. Not yet. What he really needed while in his current condition was control. His wagers, his bets his stakes. How long had she been proving them right? Or wrong?
God put her here for a reason and she was surer than ever that it was to give Mordecai that one chance everybody deserved. Love. Mercy. Somebody sacrificing everything for him.
But to give him that meant stripping him of his control. Teach him that being powerless wouldn’t kill him that others with control over him could be trusted to do the right thing. She needed to show him that he could trust her.
